Pull marketing versus push marketing

In the real world, "push" marketing (e.g. direct mail) is generally accepted -- despite misgivings over junk mail, in-your-face commercials, and high-pressure sales tactics. Similarly, most marketers consider "pull" marketing (e.g. let them call you) far too passive. So, in the real world, the predominant marketing paradigm is push, not pull.

On the net, the reverse applies. Most forms of push marketing (e.g. bulk email) are highly controversial and can stir up vicious backlashes. Pull marketing (e.g. getting other websites to link to yours) is far less fraught with danger, and can be very effective, especially if aggressively pursued.

A newly launched Internet presence can be "push" announced inexpensively in several ways:
  • An electronic press release (it might be worth posting via BusinessWire)
  • "Posts" in online forums (places people hangout and chat)
  • Traditional marketing materials (e.g. by slipping in something to a mailing)

Internet presences that serve niches should draw a significant percentage of their traffic from the big search engines and directories (such as Yahoo, Excite, Infoseek, AltaVista, etc.) and/or smaller industry specific directories.
